Freiburger’s “magic bolt box” stresses me out immensely, and now it will stress you out too.

No it won’t, because it’s not mine. I don’t care about OTHER people’s messes.

I have one of those. Mix of body panel fasteners, interior bolts, random small brackets, seat belt mounting bolts, stuff like that... I’ll never be able to find the right bolts when I need them.

Eeek.
My dad always had a Folger's coffee can or two full of screws, brackets, whatever. I think it is more the size and weight of all those bolts to be put inside a small plastic toolbox.

This is my nightmare

My shop teacher had multiple boxes like this except larger and I HAD TO FIND SPECIFIC BOLTS IN THEM. (shudders)

no, this seems about on par with my bolts boxes, which are in fact used candy containers from Costco
mmmm, M&Ms and chocolate covered almonds
dishwasher pacs are handy becuase they’re stackable!
the Country Time lemonade is good becuase it’s tall enough for zip ties

As a robotics coach the task of sorting the “magic bolt box” was one of those special tasks that no one wanted.

You didn’t see my dad’s shop, it had tables filled with trays of random bolts. Finding the right bolt or the right nut was sometime a 45 min job.

I was too busy being amazed that he actually found what he needed to be disturbed by it.

I have one of those. I never throw out old fasteners. It’s saved so many repair projects around the garage over the years.

I have that bolt box except mine is crumbling cardboard.

When you have a memory like his you can have that bin my memory needs more organization.

Please tell me it’s sorted enough to at least have ONLY metric OR SAE fasteners in there.
...
Dang it, why did I have to zoom in?!? GAH!

I don't throw away old fasteners, but I end up dropping them in my gravel driveway and losing them forever

If you’re disorganized enough to even have a box like that, you damn well know i t’s gonna be a mix.

I think it's more from experience, i.e. he's done so many GM small block harmonic balancers that he can tell it's the right bolt on sight

Man I used to have a box like that! lol
S pent a couple of hours one weekend sorting it all into compartmentalized containers, and I’m happy to report that I’ve managed to keep it organized, even when adding to it . Totally worth t he initial effort, and so satisfying to use now . Not just for finding what I need when I have it , but also to quickly s top wasting time rooting around for something that I definitely don’t have .

I just need a whole wall of those tan pull-out drawers like the hardware store has.

can confirm, grew up keeping nuts and bolts in those quart sized metal cans, no real organization other than wood screws and lag bolts were separate from the common fasteners. Looking for a specific nut or bolt? dump it out on the floor, spread it around, grab the ones you need and sweep the rest back into the can. I still have a couple of containers of mixed nuts and washers, all sizes...
